My Favorite Soup: Italian Wedding Soup

When it comes to soups, I can easily say I have a hands-down favorite. My vote for this soup is heavily influenced by nostalgia; it was one of the first real meals my mother fed me when I was a baby. The legend is that I'd slurp it loudly and the broth would dribble down my neck and into my clothes.

The recipe was handed down to my mother, and adapted at each stop, from a man named Fran, whose daughter was my first babyhood friend. I don't really remember Fran — he passed away when we were still tiny — but he lives within me every time I make this soup. Now I feed it to everyone — from my own little person, who also slurps and dribbles it, to Saturday night company, who usually use a napkin.

Freshome’s 10 Most Popular Apartment Designs of 2010

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 07:08 AM PST

After putting together a list with 10 most interesting architecture projects of 2010, we decided to take this idea further and also display a countdown of the best apartments in 2010, according to your Facebook shares, as they are currently registered on Freshome. You can click on every picture for more photos & details about each loft. Here they are:

popular apartment designs 2010 Freshomes 10 Most Popular Apartment Designs of 2010 #10. We begin our list with this stylish apartment by UNStudio located in downtown Manhattan, New York. Called The Collector's Loft, this beautiful crib combines the elegance of an art gallery with the coziness of a common apartment. The owner wanted a special place for depositing his books and different artifacts he had collected throughout the years, a crib that would offer him the comfort of interacting with art.

#9. Red Nest is an ingenious apartment located in Paris. Envisioned by designer Paul Coudamy,  this original project houses a bedroom, a dressing area and a home office, all "squeezed" into just 23 square meters. This red and white apartment features incredible solutions that counterweight the lack of space, turning it into an ideal home, without making any compromises regarding style or function.

#8. Here is a delightful and spectacular looking apartment located in Darlinghurst, New South Wales, Australia. Designed by Weir Phillips Architects, this three bedroom apartment bursts with freedom and craziness, which is what inspired us to say that this is the ultimate bachelor's crib. The living room is the focal point of the house and accommodates some of the wackiest elements this loft has to offer, such as a SPA and a BBQ section. Other spectacular features of this apartment include a retractable roof, a concrete floor, a large study area and an indoor office with abundant storage space, intriguing art works and many, many more.

#7. This 94 square meter apartment has a privileged location on the corner of the building. You are looking at a nicely arranged flat (where else but in Sweden?) with three rooms, one beside the park, with unobstructed views over the green expanse outside, and one facing the street, while the kitchen overlooks the pleasant and peaceful courtyard. Appealing indeed.

#6. Everyone loves a home with a view! This incredible apartment in Darling Point, Sydney has an incredible location which allows its inhabitants to enjoy stunning views of the harbor and Opera House. This apartment takes up the whole 16′th floor of a circular tower, which makes things… panoramic.

#5. In one of the most populated cities in the world, where 30 square meter apartments are a way of living, one has to be creative. How many rooms can fit in a 30 sq meters apartment? One? Ok, maybe two, if you count the hallway. Prepare to get shocked: Gary Chang managed to fit 24 rooms in such a place and each and everyone of them has its unique personality. Be sure to click the photo below and go to the original post for more information on this unique project.

#4. My Life in 80m² is an ingenious residential living project meant to demonstrate that the size of a crib has little to do with the comfort and design quality it can provide. This idea comes from Italian company Poliform and its originality can be found in a series of unusual combinations of elements and colors.

#3. This next exquisite penthouse comes from the amazing collection of Sotheby`s for sale portfolio. Located in New York City`s gorgeous TriBeCa neighborhood , the luxurious penthouse apartment has an extended space that measures over 10,000 square feet, all designed and carefully maintained so that luxury can be recognized in every corner.

#2. Your second best happens to be a beautiful small apartment (61 sqare meters) located in Sweden. You are looking at a crib that is perfect for socializing but also for meditation in solitude. The color palette is cheerful, yet subtle and tasteful. With wide and spacious interiors, this home looks very warm and inviting.

#1. Looks familiar? This crib was unofficially voted the best apartment of 2010 by our Freshome readers and it is a project that manages to maximize space and create a cozy living environment as well. The East Village Studio comes from JPDA Architects, stretches over an area of 46 square meters (500 square feet) and was built as a little "nest" for the owners who also work here. It has all the utilities a common looking contemporary home has and dare we say a lot more.

Airy Residence in Cyprus Combining Wood and Glass on a White Background

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 05:53 AM PST

We came across a beautiful residence that presents an unequalled mixture of simplicity and modern style. Created by Greek architecture firm Varda Studio, the home named Adamos Residence is a luxurious collection of elegant spaces located in Limassol, Cyprus. The architects played with wood, stone and light to create unique living spaces that perforate through the usual interior design in order to offer an interesting choice of furniture, materials and decorations. Highlighting every room with the help of wood and powerful colours like orange and yellow, the interior design seems to be integrated in the inhabitant’s lifestyle. A large and airy living room can be seen right from the entrance. The raised deck in the living space delimitates the hallway, while the wood theme continues on the next floor. Modern staircases made from wood and glass offer a quick look into the interior design of the upstairs spaces. The Marilyn Monroe room divider in the bedroom is the perfect choice to express the elegant feeling of the home.

Sophisticated and Detail-Oriented Home in Melbourne

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 05:02 AM PST

With a very complex interior design, the Coronet Grove Residence by Maddison Architects is located in the Beaumaris suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The dynamic architecture speaks about the beauty of combining raw design with the love for details. Featuring 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, the residence has sophisticated open spaces and showcases a meticulous attention to details. The neighborhood had a deep impact on the design of the house and this led to an amazing connection to the surroundings. Panoramas of the Port Phillip Bay can be easily enjoyed from the long and narrow terrace, but also from the large windows that allow light to constantly create elegant shadows in each room. The architects have a better understanding of the surprising interior and exterior of the house: “Formally, the house is split into two rectangular boxes. The black, zinc-clad southern box encloses living, kitchen and outdoor spaces, and cantilevers out beyond its ground floor enclosure to capture 270° Port Phillip Bay views. The discrete activities of the house, such as sleeping and bathing, are accommodated with the separate masonry northern wing.

How to Choose a Fireplace Mantle to Fit your Decor Style

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 03:58 AM PST

It is often said the kitchen is the heart of the home. If you have a fireplace in your home, you can equally say it is as well. From the heat it gives off, the ambiance it creates, and the presence it holds in the room as the focal point, your fireplace takes center stage. When choosing a fireplace, the mantle that sits above it comes in a variety of styles, colors, and many don't have a mantle at all. Here's how to choose a fireplace mantle to fit you and your home's decorative style.

fireplace stone e1293275875412 How to Choose a Fireplace Mantle to Fit your Decor Style

  • Purpose of the mantle: For many, the purpose of the mantle is just as important as the look. The mantle acts as a crown or anchor to the fireplace visually, and allows a decorative display area for family pictures, artisan décor, and seasonal decorations. Depending on how you want your fireplace to look, will help you decide if a mantle that holds family mementos fits your design style or if you'd prefer a slim and sleek one that doesn't hold anything.
  • Profile options: Traditional mantels were made of wood, concrete or stone, and had hand carved and intricate detailing in them. More traditional homes may have side detailing from the fireplace that reach down to the floor. If your home has a rustic décor, consider using the fireplace rock, brick or a piece of timber for your mantle. Sleek and sophisticated décor may opt for a very thin and minimal mantle or opt for none at all.

fireplace view How to Choose a Fireplace Mantle to Fit your Decor Style

  • Fit your fireplace style and size: If your fireplace is large, than a mantle that fits the robust nature of your fireplace would be fitting. A horizontal mantle doesn't have to be restricted to the width of the fireplace opening. The mantle can become the main feature of the fireplace, and wrap around your fireplace that is double sided in the center of the room. Determine what size of mantle will dimensionally fit and what style coincides with your fireplace. Too large of mantle can overpower, while too small can look awkward and not visually appealing.

  • Unique fireplaces may not need a mantle: Fireplaces have seen a design influenced shift in recent years, and the appeal for unique and one-of-a-kind fireplaces is popular. If your design style would prefer a fireplace that you can't find everywhere, seek out artisans and masons who build and handcraft fireplaces. Also, research designer fireplaces on the internet. From fire pits that can be installed in your living room, to open fireplaces with no walls, a unique fireplace will be a conversation piece instantly in your room.

fireplace trendy e1293275980574 How to Choose a Fireplace Mantle to Fit your Decor Style

Your fireplace mantle can become the place for displaying your family's photos and achievements, or it can be left bare and welcoming all alone. From large and chunky mantles to the absence of a mantle, to aesthetically concentrate on only the fireplace, your decorative style will help you decide. For inspiration, visit model homes, flip through magazines or visit fireplace showrooms to give you ideas for your space. Remember, a fireplace can go in a bathroom, study, bedroom, or you can opt for movable fireplaces as well! Choose your style, and then warm your home with a mantle that is perfect for your decorative space.

Freshome reader's we'd love to hear what type of fireplace you own, or what type you'd like to have in your home! Leave us your comments below.

Sensational Light Project in Vancouver: Fire with Fire

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:02 AM PST

Fire with Fire is a remarkable art project from Isabelle Hayeur put to practice in Downtown Eastside, Vancouver. What you see in the photos and video below is actually a site-specific video installation, created with the help of video projectors and 3 blu-ray players. Here is more information from the artist: “In 1886, soon after the city was incorporated, the Great Vancouver Fire swept down on the neighborhood’s and razed almost all of it to the ground. The video installation Fire with Fire recalls this troubled period of Vancouver's history. It also alludes to the neighborhood present conditions by  reminding us that many lives have been consumed there, worn down by years of homelessness, drug use, street prostitution, and violence.” Be sure to check out the video at the end of the post for a general idea. What we find odd is the fact that people walk by, notice the fire, yet they continue untroubled. Part of the typical modern city attitude, we figured.- via w ooh ome

Blub Lounge Club in Barcelona, the Experience of a World Underseas

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 11:51 PM PST

Blub lounge is an intriguing looking lounge club designed by Elia Felices Interiorismo and located in Barcelona, mimicking a small sub-aquatic world. Here is the description we received from the project developers: “The first immersion takes place as we come through the door with its vegetable, organic imagery. The open interior space enables circuits of interaction to be established. Movement between the different public areas has been made easier by the use of divisions built into the walls, using new elements such as the blue anodized aluminum Kriska® curtains, which link up to make a light and versatile mesh screen on the upper part of the walls which is both decorative and functional in that it allows spaces to be defined while providing light, colour and movement similar to that of water. The space has been organized to operate on one practically rectangular level, where the various areas are marked by  differences in height.

Underseas like Bar Freshome04 Blub Lounge Club in Barcelona, the Experience of a World Underseas

The lighting, shapes, colours, furniture and the space itself create the experience of forming part of an undersea world. The light shining onto the different elements is broken up into tiny shafts, resembling the rays of light under the sea, bathing every detail in an underwater glimmer. One of the crucial areas for more sophisticated clients, the VIP area, is designed with vertical rows of different plant species, dividing the space into geometric modules of varying height to create a natural, living environment which both protects and provides privacy for those who want to get away from the crowds.” (photography: Rafael Vargas)

10 Ways to Achieve a Gender Neutral Kid’s Room

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 08:17 AM PST

It seems that the traditional pink and blue rooms for kid's rooms will always be traditional, but gender neutral rooms are increasing in popularity. Whether it's because decorative colors don't have to be gender biased, or more children are sharing rooms with their siblings, gender neutral rooms can be appealing to all. Rooms that have colors that appeal to both genders also increases individuality and will create rooms that kids love. Check out these 10 ways to make your kid's room gender neutral and look great for years to come!

gender aqua e1286747060403 10 Ways to Achieve a Gender Neutral Kid's Room

1.) Create a theme: Themes don't have to be limited to cars and flowers.  Gender neutral themes can range from animals to musical instruments! Teach your children early about shapes, colors and numbers with gender neutral themes.

2.) Choose furniture for the future: When buying nursery furniture, buy furniture in natural woods, white, or black to use for future siblings! We often buy furniture that is only for one child.  Gender neutral finishes will be more versatile for the future.

3.) Gender neutral colors are beautiful: Whether you choose the pastel side of the color spectrum: sage greens, butter yellows, and tans or the saturated side with espresso browns, reds, and gold.  Gender neutral rooms can have colors that compliment or contrast each other.  Add neutral trim colors to bring the room together effortlessly.

4.) Furniture styles can be versatile: Avoid furniture that has a lot of ornamentation and adornment. Furniture with script detailing and complicated woodworking can be perceived as being favored to one gender or the other. Instead consider modern clean lines that will suit both genders.

5.) Use wall stickers for versatile décor: If you are decorating a kid's room with growing children, wall stickers are a perfect way to appeal to both genders without costly room décor changes. From nature scenes to sport activities, growing children can choose what appeals to them, and can change as they grow.

6.) Unite the room with color: If you are decorating rooms that both genders must share consider using colors that compliment on both sides.  A room that uses espresso brown as a unifying color can then use apple green for the boys side and a light pastel green on the girls side.  One room can have individuality while still providing unity.

7.) Ask older children for their thoughts: Gender neutral rooms aren't only for younger children.  Tween and teenagers who may not share a room, but may have outgrown typical color schemes for their rooms.  Ask your teens for the colors they enjoy. You would be surprised that orange and purple are huge hits for older kids and yes, they are gender neutral too!

8.) Multifunctional rooms: If your child shares a room with a home office or alternate space, a gender neutral color will help meld the space together.  Use a neutral color palette of modern browns, tans, yellows and greens to unite the space. Nature derived colors will provide a unity and feeling of wholeness within the room.

9.) Choose a pattern as inspiration for décor: Have you found a quilt or piece of artwork that you love the colors but don't know how to work it into your décor.  Gender neutral rooms can derive inspiration from artwork or hanging quilts by pulling color choices for bedding, wall treatments, carpets and accessories from.

10.) Decorate with names: As simple as it is, alphabet décor is a popular way to achieve a gender neutral room without having to splurge on décor.   Stain wood letters representing your child’s name over their bed.  Use fun alphabet nursery rhymes to bring a whimsical touch to their room.  The more personalized a space can be, the less gender specific the room needs to be.

Your child's room can be exciting and fun with gender neutral décor and colors. Take your time and envision what feeling you want your child's room to evoke.  These 10 tips will help you create a special place for the room that you always wanted for your children, regardless of their gender. Embrace the process and enjoyment of decorating your child's room.
